Wine Kin is a Singapore-based online retailer founded in 2023 by négociant Desmond Yeo. They bring the world’s finest wines, spirits, and sake to connoisseurs in Southeast Asia.

Most wine companies operate offline, but Wine Kin saw the value of embracing technology from day one. As a new entrant to the alcohol industry, Wine Kin needed to differentiate itself from existing retailers. Challenge 1: Inefficient overseas transfers to suppliers and poor exchange rates 

Paying overseas suppliers via local banks was a time-consuming process. On top of this, Wine Kin had limited solutions for minimising forex risk. Booking FX contracts through the bank locked the business into a weekly exchange rate, which meant they missed out on more favourable rates that arose within that period.

Challenge 2: Accepting payments from customers with different preferences and needs 

When it comes to eCommerce, Wine Kin’s customers have diverging preferences. There are those who are used to shopping for fine wine online, and another group who rarely make online purchases. The latter type prefers to sample wine in person and settle high-value transactions through bank transfers. Some of them are so averse to eCommerce payments that they resort to sharing their credit card details over the phone, which opens up security risks and diminishes the consumer experience.

Airwallex's payment links streamlined the process of collecting payments from Wine Kin's diverse customer groups. Before Airwallex, Wine Kin used separate providers to handle eCommerce transactions, receive customer payments and pay suppliers. This fragmented system meant doing the same payout processes on different platforms, which increased operational complexity.
