Moom Health expands globally and cuts manual work with Airwallex Business Accounts

Moom Health built its brand around listening closely to its community. But as it scaled, its finance ops became increasingly fragmented, manual, and reactive. An Airwallex Business Account gave the team back time and capital to keep building for the community it serves.

One platform for cross-border payments, payroll, and spend

Mili and Maya Kale didn’t set out to build another wellness brand. They started Moom Health after struggling to find products that addressed their own health needs. That experience continues to shape the way they’re building the business: they listen closely, personalise their solutions, and stay focused on what people really need.

As Moom grew from a two-person startup into an omnichannel brand, that same care became harder to support behind the scenes. But every supplier payment, overseas salary, and employee expense had to move through a financial setup that was slow, fragmented, and anything but tailored to the way Moom operated.

Instead of managing multiple banking relationships, Moom opened a single Airwallex Business Account to access local currency accounts, transfer funds, and earn yield. With Airwallex Spend, they can also manage company expenses across multiple currencies in the same place.

Today, Moom no longer toggles between banks and tools to move money – and the cost and time it recovers go straight back into its community and products. But getting there wasn’t easy.

The challenge

Paying global suppliers and teams was slow and expensive

Moom’s supply chain spans several countries: ingredients from North America, manufacturing in India, and packaging in China. Setting up bank accounts to facilitate supplier payments could take anywhere from 30 to 45 days. Product launches and market entries stalled from delays that came with bank approvals.

The problems didn’t stop once accounts were created. Cross-border payments set the business back by hundreds of dollars every month in bank charges alone – and that was before conversion losses.

Most of Moom’s overseas suppliers only release goods once payment is received. For a business offering tailored monthly subscription plans, keeping up with inventory restocks could mean the difference between a lost sale and a lifelong customer.

Payroll came with a hidden tax on growth. Salaries for staff based in the Philippines, Indonesia, and India were sent in SGD and then converted to local currency at FX rates that cost Moom an extra 1.5% on every payment. Every dollar lost to fees and spreads was a dollar that could have gone into improving formulations and reaching more women.

Working capital sat idle between restocks

To keep up with demand across its retail stores, stockists, and website, Moom holds up to 180 days of inventory at a time. Between restock cycles, most of its working capital sat idle, earning next to nothing in fixed deposit accounts. Earning a return meant giving up access to cash Moom couldn't afford to be short on when it was time to send the next batch of supplier payments.

Mili Kale

Co-founder of Moom Health

"Maya and I are both not finance people. It’s not where our strengths lie. In the early days, we were doing everything ourselves, but as Moom grew across markets, that stopped being sustainable. We had to be honest about what we couldn’t do and build the support systems we needed around us."

Expanding into new markets multiplied manual work for the finance team

As Moom expanded, the fragmented tools that worked for a smaller team started to strain with more employees, more markets, and more expenses every month.

Smaller purchases, like Grab rides and team lunches, were paid out of pocket by employees. Larger ones, like ad spend, subscriptions, and business travel, went on the founders' personal cards.

What followed was a tedious reimbursement process that involved the finance team having to chase for receipts, manually record claims on Xero, match them to transactions, and track approvals across disconnected systems. Reimbursement cycles cost the team up to 48 hours a month – time that could have gone into planning Moom's next move.

The solution

With Airwallex, Moom finally had a financial setup tailored to how the business actually runs, freeing up time and capital for it to better serve its ever-growing customer base.

Settle overseas transfers in hours at bank-beating FX rates

Not having access to local payment rails made it slow and costly for Moom to transfer funds globally. Airwallex Business Accounts solved this.

With Borderless Cash, Moom can receive and send money like a local business in every market it operates in, without relying on local banks. Supplier payments are routed through Airwallex’s local rails at interbank rates, cutting out the marked-up fees Moom used to fork out for every transaction. Now, the team can track a payment status, confirm it with the supplier, and move on to the next operational decision.

The same local currency Moom collects from customers can also be used to pay its overseas staff – no forced conversions or additional fees. Instead of taking days to clear, both supplier payments and salaries now land within the same day.

Grow capital without losing liquidity

Airwallex Business Accounts also allow Moom to put its idle cash to work. With Yield, the team can earn returns on its USD and SGD balances without having to move funds across separate accounts or incurring conversion fees. Funds can be withdrawn within 48 hours for the next restock while returns get reinvested back into the balance, compounding the capital the business can put to work as it scales.

Reduce admin work and gain cash flow visibility

Airwallex Spend lets Moom issue dedicated Visa debit cards with built-in spending limits to employees, so they no longer have to pay out of pocket or rely on founders’ personal cards to cover business expenses.

Employees upload receipts straight from the Airwallex mobile app, where they’re automatically matched to the right transaction before being pushed to Xero. This cuts out the manual re-entry step that used to eat into the finance team's time.

With payments, payroll, and spend running through one account, the finance team sees exactly what’s going out and what’s coming in at any point in the month, instead of piecing that picture together after the fact.

"Airwallex has become one of the support systems we need around us. More than just ease, it’s about being able to communicate easily, troubleshoot quickly, and not have to do everything ourselves."

The result

With an Airwallex Business Account and Spend at the centre of its financial operations, Moom no longer loses margin or time to fragmented systems. Now, the team has a real-time view of its cash position, giving them the confidence to make faster decisions as the business grows.

  • Up to S$36,000 saved per year on international transfer fees, after eliminating hidden bank charges and up to 4% in FX markups with Airwallex.

  • Overseas supplier payments and payroll now settle in hours, down from 2–3 business days.

  • Reconciliation now takes half a working day, down from up to 48 hours per month, with card transactions now automatically syncing to Xero.

  • Idle working capital earns a return with Airwallex Yield, generating over US$1,000 in returns per month to be reinvested back into the business.

"If you’d asked me three years ago, we would have said financial tooling was unnecessary and just something we had to deal with. Now we see it as an advantage: building the systems and processes that help us keep building for the women we started Moom for.”

Looking ahead, Moom is building on the same instinct that built the brand: meeting women where they are. The same financial infrastructure supporting Moom’s rapid growth across Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong today is set to scale with every market launch the brand has its sights set on. That gives Mili and Maya more capacity to focus on growing Moom's reach and bringing personalised wellness to more women across the region.
