Standalone terminals

Accept in-person payments on standalone Airwallex Smart POS terminals with zero integration.

Airwallex POS terminals (standalone mode) are dedicated devices with the Airwallex POS app preinstalled. The terminal operates independently of your point-of-sale or order management system—you take payments on the device without API integration between your back office and the terminal.

For POS-driven checkout with automatic order-to-payment linkage, see Integrated terminals (cloud mode).

When to use standalone terminals

Choose standalone Airwallex terminals when you want:

  • Zero integration effort—no development to connect your POS to Airwallex.
  • Staff-facing checkout on dedicated hardware at a counter or on the shop floor.

This path suits first-party retail, hospitality, and service businesses that do not need your ordering system to trigger payments on the terminal automatically.

Trade-off: manual reconciliation

Standalone mode does not link order information from your POS to payment information on the terminal automatically. You reconcile orders and payments manually (or through separate processes). If you need linked order and payment data, use integrated terminals (cloud mode).

How standalone mode works

  1. Contact your Airwallex Account Manager to enable POS payments, complete POS KYB, order terminals, and activate devices with the on-device activation code.
  2. Staff in-store create a payment on the terminal by entering the payment amount.
  3. The shopper pays by presenting the card or smart phone, or by using the supported local payment methods.
  4. Transaction status and settlement follow your account configuration and appear in Airwallex reporting and the web app.

Capabilities on the terminal

  • Card presentation: Insert, swipe, and NFC tap.
  • Operations: Create payment and refund, query transactions, print receipt, place a hold on card payments and cancel/capture asynchronously.
  • Methods (examples): Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, WeChat Pay, PayNow, Octopus, and other local methods by market.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (recommended), mobile SIM, or Bluetooth.
  • OS: Android-based terminal software.
