Custom checkout with Payments and Billing APIs

Copy for LLMView as Markdown

Use this guide when you want a fully custom checkout experience: your application owns the shopper UI and product logic, Payments collects the payment, and you create and link Airwallex Billing resources with API calls.

If you sell with Airwallex Billing products and prices, use Hosted Billing Checkout, Embedded Billing Checkout, or Billing Checkout Elements instead of orchestrating Payments and Billing yourself. Hosted Billing Checkout redirects shoppers to Airwallex; Embedded Billing Checkout and Billing Checkout Elements embed checkout on your site. Those options create customers, payment sources, and subscriptions or invoices automatically when checkout completes.

Payments Native API, pre-built payment elements, Drop-in Element, Hosted Payment Page, and Mobile SDK integrations require you to orchestrate Billing yourself after payment.

Integrate with pre-built payment elements or Drop-in

Embed Airwallex Payments UI on your checkout page to collect payment details. Learn more in Save and reuse payment details (Card Element, Split Card Element, Drop-in Element, and Hosted Payment Page).

Billing - Drop-in Element

Airwallex's native Payments API integration allows you to handle interactions between your application's frontend and backend. Native API is best suited when you would like a highly customized payment experience. Learn more in Native Payments API Registered User Checkout.

Airwallex’s mobile SDK integrations enable you to incorporate the Airwallex payments module into your mobile app for processing payments. It’s available on both iOS and Android platforms. Learn more in Registered user checkout (iOS and Android tabs).

Build your subscriptions integration

After a Payments checkout flow completes, the customer’s payment details are captured in a Payment MethodAPI object. Follow these steps to start a Billing subscription with that payment method.

Step 1: Create a Billing customer

Refer to Create Billing customer to create and manage a billing customer.

Step 2: Create a payment source

To start a subscription, create a Payment sourceAPI object. In Create a payment sourceAPI, pass:

  • external_id: The ID of the Payment Method from the Payments flow.
  • linked_payment_account_id: ID of the Airwallex account used to collect payment (Airwallex web app > Settings > Account details).

Step 3: Create a subscription

Call Create a subscriptionAPI with:

  • billing_customer_id: ID from step 1.
  • collection_method: AUTO_CHARGE.
  • linked_payment_account_id: Same as step 2.
  • payment_source_id: ID from step 2.

Refer to Subscriptions for more detail.
