Introduction to Treasury
Airwallex’s Treasury product enables you to manage your funds globally all in one place. Whether it's via the Airwallex WebApp or APIs, you will be equipped with a range of capabilities to serve your needs:
- Create Global Accounts instantly to receive bank transfers and authorize direct debit payouts in preferred currencies globally, without having to manage multiple accounts with different banks or wait for long approval processes
- Add funds via direct debit from your external financial accounts by creating Linked Accounts
- Pool and manage funds in various currencies using the Wallet
- Enable your merchants, business partners, subsidiaries or customers (“connected accounts”) with the capabilities above as part of your own product offering via Scale
Take a look at the following sections to understand our capabilities and how you can make use of them.
How it works
By registering and integrating with Airwallex, you can leverage our Treasury product to manage your own funds, and/or on behalf of your connected accounts with consent (e.g. create Global Accounts for your customers to receive funds, and retrieve transaction details for them). To learn more about how you can provide these capabilities to your connected accounts as a platform, please see our Scale product.
The conceptual diagram below illustrates the high-level information flow, fund flow, and our capability offerings.
Wallet
For any given Airwallex account, your multi-currency Wallet (“the Wallet”) maintains all the funds that are available for use. These funds are physically held and safeguarded with Airwallex in a secure and compliant manner. You can receive funds into your Wallet via bank transfers to Global Accounts and direct debits from Linked Accounts; as well as pay out of your Wallet via direct debit payouts through Global Accounts.
Key features
Centralized treasury management
A Wallet's balance is organized by currency and balance type. A given currency’s available balance pools all the funds you have with Airwallex from different sources in that currency. For example, you might receive funds in AUD via our Online Payments product and/or different Global Accounts; all those funds will be settled into your Wallet and added to your AUD balance.
End-to-end fund flow support for Airwallex products
Your Wallet brings together the funds in and funds out scenarios supported in our products. You can receive funds via Global Accounts, direct debits from Linked Accounts, Online Payments, transfers from other Airwallex accounts, and other adjustments. Once the funds are available in your Wallet balance, you can use them for Transactional FX, Payouts, direct debits from Global Accounts, and Issuing.
Consolidated reporting
All financial transactions are recorded and traceable in the Wallet. Using our WebApp or APIs, you can retrieve balances and generate financial statements/reports for the purposes of reconciliation, proof of funds, data analysis, etc.
If you are using our Scale solution, you can also manage your connected accounts’ Wallets on their behalf.
Global Accounts
A Global Account enables you to receive bank transfers into and authorize direct debit payouts from your Wallet in a region and currency of choice. You can create multiple Global Accounts on demand without complex application processes or approval delays. After creating a Global Account, you will receive bank account information such as an account number, bank code/routing number, account name, account type, bank name/location, etc. You can share these details with your payers so they can send you bank transfers, or provide them to your recipients and authorize direct debit payouts so you can pay them.
Note that Global Accounts only act as conduits to receive funds or for direct debit payouts, and do not hold balances. Your balances across various currencies will be held in your multi-currency Wallet.
Our Global Accounts product is continuously expanding coverage and improving in capabilities. In regions where we provide Global Accounts with capabilities to receive bank transfers and authorize direct debit payouts, you will be able to operate just like a local business using a local bank account, but powered by a more automated online experience. To learn about supported regions, currencies and capabilities of our Global Accounts product, see Supported regions and currencies.
By integrating with Airwallex APIs, you will be able to create Global Accounts programmatically. Upon creation, you will be able to retrieve bank account information immediately and put them to use, e.g. display them to your payers in your own system or product. You can also request transaction details on Global Accounts at any time.
When using our Scale product, you can create Global Accounts on behalf of your connected accounts and enable them to receive bank transfers and authorize direct debit payouts (depending on the authorization level).
If you are a platform looking for the ability to receive payments via cards or alternative payment methods from your shoppers, see Airwallex Online Payments capability.
Receive funds
Global Accounts allow you (and your connected accounts under our Scale product) to receive bank transfers via local payment methods and/or SWIFT from you, your customers, other parties and various platforms such as Amazon and Google.
All funds received from payments made to Global Accounts will be settled directly into the Wallet. For example, if you receive sales proceeds from your customers with Global Accounts and would like to pay your suppliers, these sales proceeds are first settled into your Wallet in order to fund your supplier payments (incl. fees). See Receive bank transfers to Global Accounts for a step-by-step guide on how to implement solutions for your own business use cases.
Linked Accounts
A Linked Account is a verified external financial account (such as a bank account, credit/debit card, or e-wallet account) that is bound to an Airwallex account. Currently, we only support linking of bank accounts under the names of an Airwallex account’s registered business entity or its legal representative/directors.
Under certain circumstances, for compliance purposes you are required to provide verified external banking information in order to receive and payout funds. Linked Accounts will help you fulfill these requirements. And with our direct debits from Linked Accounts capability, you and your connected accounts can add funds to the Wallets via direct debits from your external bank accounts. Please see Supported regions and currencies for where you can add funds via direct debits.
We provide a suite of APIs that enables you to manage your Linked Accounts and direct debits from Linked Accounts programmatically. You can retrieve the transaction details and statuses of your direct debits anytime for display, reconciliation, and analysis purposes in your product/systems. See Get started with Linked Accounts for a step-by-step guide on how to verify and manage your Linked Accounts.
When using our Scale product, direct debits via Linked Accounts will become a more powerful feature that allows you to pull funds from your connected accounts’ external bank accounts to fund other Airwallex transactions from their Wallets. To learn more about this use case and other Linked Account based solutions we are working on, please contact your Airwallex Account Manager.
