Typical use cases for International Payments

Amaroo is a surfboard retailer with a shop in Torquay, Victoria. They sell proprietary surfboards manufactured in Thailand.

They use Airwallex to pay salaries to their staff in Thailand. Amaroo takes advantage of Airwallex’s high speed and low cost payments technology, connecting directly to local payments networks in Thailand, thus cutting out intermediary banks and unnecessary fees. Amaroo keep funds in their AUD Airwallex wallet which they can convert to THB to keep in their THB wallet whenever they are happy with the Airwallex forex rates. They then use either AUD or THB wallet to make salary payments to their staff in Vietnam, directly from their offices in Torquay using the Airwallex Web App. Amaroo can choose to use either AUD or THB as the source currency for their THB salary payments. Airwallex payments platform is built on leading security and compliance providers, and adopt world class security practices to ensure Amaroo funds are secure at all parts of the payment experience.

Airwallex Web App QuickStart

Single Payment

Step 1 Create new Contacts - Payer and Recipient

There are two contact types you can create:

  • Recipient: Receiving party of the payment, and this is an individual or business.

  • Payer: By default you make payments from yourself, but if your Airwallex Account allows paying on behalf of others, you can create new payers from contact list.

There are different fields required when creating a business or personal recipient/payer. Once recipients and payers details have been created, they can be selected while making payments.

Step 2.1 Select the Currency, Recipient (receiving party) and the payment amount

Firstly, while making a payment, you need to select the receiving party and enter payment amount in Airwallex Web App. And the payer will default to yourself.

Choosing a recipient will automatically update the receiving currency to the correct currency for that recipient. There are two options to enter a payment amount - the amount to be sent or the amount to be received.

Step 2.2 Select the Payer or Pay from yourself if Pay on behalf of (POBO) allowed

You can contact your Account Manager if you need to pay on behalf of others(POBO). If POBO is allowed, you can either choose Payer from existing Contacts list or create a new one. Besides, you can still choose to pay from yourself.

Step 3 Enter Additional details

  • Reference This is a short note or reference that will be included on the recipient’s bank statement. Please note that Airwallex cannot guarantee this will be displayed on the recipient’s statement in full as the receiving bank may remove or shorten the reference.
  • SWIFT charge type If your payment is made using the SWIFT network, you will need to select whether the payer or recipient bears any intermediary fees from using the network. Click on the drop down menu to assign. For more information refer to Swift and Local section below.
  • Payment date The payment date will automatically be assigned as ‘Standard’. This means that the transaction will be sent within regular processing times.

Future capability to set a payment date is coming soon. Once available, you will be able to select ‘Set’ if you wish to choose an alternative date to process the transaction. This will open a calendar window from which you can choose the date for the transaction to be processed. For more information on Standard or Set dates, please contact your account manager, or email [email protected]

  • Reason Click on the reason drop down menu to reveal a list of payment reasons to choose from.
  • Optional You can also include a custom Request ID (10-50 characters ) to track your transaction and the Request ID must be unique . If left blank, a Request ID will be generated automatically.

Step 4 Terms and Conditions

Before confirming the payment, you must confirm that you have read and agree to the Airwallex terms and conditions before your payment is able to be processed.

Step 5 Payment Confirmed

After successfully confirming your payment, you will be presented with an overview of the transaction, including the transaction ID, send and receive amounts, fees and the payment and settlement dates. The payment is now booked. You will receive an email from the Airwallex Account Team to confirm your booking.

A breakdown of send and receive amounts, conversion rate, and fees can be found in the Payment summary to the right of the page. The conversion / exchange rate will be refreshed once every 15 seconds, as indicated by the grey bar. The payment summary will also include an indicative quote for the total amount payable.

Batch Payment

Batch payment functionality allows clients to submit multiple payments for processing by uploading a single file. Clients can upload batch payment file from their devices to Airwallex. The file types allowed are as follows; xlsx, csv and json. Airwallex supports up to 500 entries per payment.

Drag & drop or browse for your batch payment file. Once selected and submitted, your file will be validated and you will get a quote. You may then submit the batch for processing.

Airwallex Client API QuickStart

Step 1: Create a New payment

To create a new payment, provide payer, recipient and payment details. If your Airwallex account allows you to pay on behalf of another entity (POBO), you will need to specify payer details to create a new payment. By default, POBO is disabled for newly opened Airwallex Accounts and payer details do not need to be specified.

The parameters in the request will be different depending on payment method, payment currency etc.). We have created a dynamic schema that will return required fields based on these key criteria. You may also refer to the Payout Guide for for these required fields and country specific account standards.

By default, payer is responsible for the payment fee. This may be passed onto the recipient by setting fee_paid_by to RECIPIENT. The fee_paid_by flag affects the total amount the payer has to pay, and the amount the recipient receives. The fee component is calculated by the system and is communicated back via fee_currency and fee_amount in the API response. The actual amounts the parties pay and receive are represented by amount_payer_pays and amount_beneficiary_receives respectively.

If the payment_currency and the source_currency are different, an underlying currency conversion in the payment request will be triggered. Currency conversion will be booked at the prevailing rate based on market conditions or based on the lock rate (please refer to Transactional FX for more details).
