The Airwallex Additional Payments app lets you offer multiple Local Payment Methods (LPMs) such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, KakaoPay, GrabPay, iDEAL, Klarna, Wero, and many more, directly at the Shopify checkout. Unlike the Airwallex Online Payments app, shoppers can see and select their preferred payment method natively in the Shopify checkout before being routed to the payment provider, providing a faster and more streamlined experience.

When to use this app

Use the Additional Payments app when you want to surface multiple LPMs natively in your Shopify checkout. If you also want to offer card payments with an embedded experience, install it alongside the Airwallex Card Payments app.

Pre-requisites

  1. You must have a valid and activated Airwallex account. If you do not have one, please follow these instructions.
  2. The payment methods you wish to offer must be enabled and activated in Airwallex (Please ensure you do this before proceeding).

Don't see a payment method?

A payment method only appears at checkout when the shopper's billing country and the store currency match the method's eligibility rules. Check our troubleshooting steps for common reasons why a payment method might not be shown.

Optional Steps

  1. Risk Management To help improve your success rates and reduce fraud you can install our Airwallex Fraud Protection App .

  2. Enable Automatic Currency Switching (ACC) (Optional) to allow your shoppers to pay in their preferred currency and payment methods. You can do so via Payments > Settings > Automatic Currency Conversion in your Airwallex WebApp. ACC Setting Screenshot

Re-save the connections page after configuring ACC

Since Automatic Currency Switching (ACC) is a global setting, you need to re-save the connections page after configuring it to ensure the changes are applied to the Airwallex Additional Payments app on your store.

Testing

  1. Enable test mode in Settings > Payments > Airwallex Additional Payments > Manage if you want to mock successful and failed transactions before going live. Additional Payments Test Mode Shopify

  2. Go to your store and attempt to check out. Select Additional payment methods at the Shopify checkout, choose the LPM you want to test, and click Place order. Additional Payments Testing Page

  3. Mock the different statuses by clicking on the status that you wish to test. For the payment pending states, they will be pending before transitioning to "Success" or "Failure" after 10 minutes.

Handling Orders for Off-Checkout Payments (e.g. QR Code, LPMs)

Some shoppers may complete payment outside the standard checkout flow, such as via QR codes or other Local Payment Methods (LPMs). To support these scenarios, Airwallex will: create the order with a "Pending Payment" status; automatically update the order to "Paid" once payment is complete; and mark the order as "Expired" if payment is not completed within the valid timeframe. Please make sure your order processing logic accounts for these status transitions. QR code payment initiation is a useful signal that this flow may occur. Shopper Experience

The Additional Payments app surfaces all your enabled Local Payment Methods under a single Additional payment methods option in the Shopify checkout. Shoppers select the option, see the methods they're eligible for based on their billing country and store currency, choose their preferred method, and click Place order to complete payment.

Depending on the payment method, the shopper may complete their payment via:

  • A redirect to the payment provider (e.g. Klarna, Afterpay, iDEAL, Wero).
  • An inline QR code or one-time password challenge.
  • A bank app handoff for instant bank transfers.
